How to Read Fabric Labels When Shopping Pre-Owned Clothing Online
Share
A fabric label is one of the most useful pieces of information in an online secondhand listing. It can help you predict how a garment will feel, hang, wear, and what care it needs.
The goal is not to rank every fiber. It is to match the material to the job you want the garment to do.
Start With Fiber Content
Cotton is breathable, but weight and weave change its behavior. Heavy twill has structure; thin jersey has softness and stretch. Linen breathes and develops character, but wrinkles are part of the deal. Wool can be warm and resilient. Rayon and viscose often create fluid drape, while polyester can add durability and wrinkle resistance.
Blends Are Not Automatically a Compromise
Elastane can make fitted jeans more comfortable. Nylon can strengthen wool. Polyester can help a garment keep its shape. Ask why the blend exists. A 98% cotton, 2% elastane jean will fit and recover differently from rigid 100% cotton denim.
Use the Label to Predict Drape
Two garments with identical measurements can look different on the body. Linen, rayon, silk, and fine knits often fall closer. Canvas, denim, thick wool, and structured cotton hold a stronger line. Compare the label with the photos: does the fabric fall, cling, fold, or stand away?
Read Care as a Cost of Ownership
Dry-clean-only pieces should earn the extra upkeep. Hand-wash instructions matter if you need easy weekly wear. High heat can shrink cotton or damage elastic fibers. If the care routine does not fit your life, the garment may become closet decoration.
Look for Fiber-Specific Wear
Wool can pill or attract moth damage. Linen may show abrasion. Rayon can weaken when wet. Stretch denim can lose recovery. Polyester can snag or hold odors. Ask for close photos of underarms, cuffs, seats, elbows, and hems.
The Five-Question Label Check
Does the fiber suit the season? Will it drape the way I want? Can I handle the care? Is the visible wear normal for the material? Does the price make sense for its remaining life? Those answers are more useful than a familiar logo.
